Summer Harvest

As the final weeks of summer approach I relish every last chance to pick the remaining vegetables and herbs from our garden.  I can’t take credit for the growth, my husband owns the green thumb.  I do love picking (and eating!) the crop and very much appreciate my husband’s hard work.

This year we harvested an abundance of cucumbers, tomatoes, basil, oregano, rosemary and thyme. I have enough pesto in the freezer to last the winter, with at least one more batch still to make.

The rosemary and thyme served to season roasted potatoes, grilled vegetables and olive oil for dipping.

Coming very soon – green peppers.

Not everything was edible.  When I was a little girl I naively thought sunflowers only grew on farms.  But I’ve since (thankfully) learned otherwise.  Now we grow them in our backyard.

Nothing compares to the fragrance of freshly cut herbs or the crunch of a garden cuke.  Every spring I look forward to planting the seeds and watching them turn into plants.

I love to cook, and cooking with fresh vegetables and herbs picked right from my backyard, well, that just feels good.  Knowing what’s in your food…that’s feel good living.

    Hi Stacey

Ooooh the photos look splendid! We did not get a chance to start our own garden this year, as construction just wrapped up and it is too late now, but will be starting one next spring for sure! Herbs, cucumber, lettuce and tomatoes will be grown for sure, and we will see what else strikes our fancy :)

This summer we were lucky to find a local farm to do a CSA program with, so we have been blessed with every seasonal vegetable and herb possible it seemed. And we are lucky it will still last until the 1st week of October :) After that it may have to be back to the grocery store for rather imported produce… but we may have a lead on another local farmer with a greenhouse :)

    Hi Stacey,

What would you recommend for a newbie who often ‘forgets’ to water plants? I started a small herbs garden and got an abundance of basil and thyme but my oregano sadly never thrived. :( What’s in for the Fall?

Thanks for these delectable pictures. I would personally like to try my hand at growing edible mushrooms such as Shiitakes. I hear it’s a tricky process to prepare them for eating — that is, if you don’t want to hallucinate at all.

Evita – Thanks. I love having a garden. We had fun a few years ago growing pumpkins! Broad leaf, needs a lot of space, but fun to grow! It’s hard to buy local in my area once the farmers markets shut down. Bummer.

Valeska – I emailed you…I often forget to water our plants. That’s why my husband grows and I pick!

Chris – I stay away from mushrooms all together….

  5. Great pics, keep up the good work.
