Are you thinking BIG Enough? Interview with Wendy Hanson, The Sassy Ladies

Last Thursday on my online radio show, Breaking the Glass Slipper, I interviewed Wendy Hanson, co-founder of The Sassy Ladies. The Sassy Ladies include three women creating resources for female entrepreneurs. Recently The Sassy Ladies launched a coaching group to help women entrepreneurs think BIG about their business. On Thursday’s show Wendy shared some of her tips to help listeners think BIG. Whether you have BIG personal or professional goals, Wendy says success is achievable. If you are ready to think BIG in your life, Wendy suggests you start with the following:

Write it down, make it happen!
Don’t just think big, get your big thoughts down on paper. This is one way to make them “real”. I took it one step further by suggesting people share their ideas with trusted and encouraging friends, family or colleagues. I find that when I speak about my goals, I have more accountability to get them done!

Use index cards
Writing down your BIG goals on index cards allows you to keep your goals handy. Keep your cards close by – in a drawer, in your bag, briefcase, and review them often. Never lose site of your BIG goals by writing them down on easy to manage cards.

Watch negative language
This includes self-talk as well as how you talk to others. As I sit writing this, I look out the window and see the rain pouring down. I love days like this – I make a cup of tea, cozy up in a sweater or wrap, and really get some work done! Others I know look out the window at the rain and say “what a miserable day.” Notice your own patterns – do you give up easily or see possibilities through the challenges?

In addition to Wendy’s suggestions, I added the importance of support. Whether you get support from through friends, family, or a coaching group, know that you don’t have to travel the path to your BIG goals alone. Recognize your strengths and surround yourself with people who can fill in any gaps.

Looking for support to think BIG? Wendy and the Sassy Ladies offer a telephone coaching group and the next session begins November 10. Visit The Sassy Ladies website, www.thesassyladies.com, for more details.

  1. Negative language (or thoughts)…I felt it coming on this morning. I was rushing off to work. And ended up behind a couple of slow cars. No place to pass. And I started to have negative thoughts flow through my brain (and the driver wasn’t even going that slow…). Then I thought - why? Why have these thoughts on something I have no control over. And the truth was - in the end it didn’t matter that my probably 12 minute ride took 13 minutes. In the grand scheme of things - it was nothing… But, even though I’ve really been working on this - on not letting negative thoughts like this creep in - it’s amazingly easy to let it happen when we let our guard down a little - in this case because I “wanted” to get there earlier.

Anyway, Stacey (and Wendy) - these are all great thoughts on thinking big. And, I tend to think we typically underestimate what big really is - that what we think is “big” is really just maybe “medium”. So, any way we can get to thinking “bigger” is a good thing…

  2. These are valuable tips. I have one BIG dream and don’t know how to get to the next step (who do I talk to, how do I explain it, etc). I think I may be ready for some coaching.

  3. It is a miserable day out, because it’s snowing in October. *chuckle*

    Okay, okay…

On this miserable day, I met someone who might be able to hire me into a job I would likely love. AND on this miserable day, I had two people give me excellent advice on writing my fiction piece for Friday. AND on this miserable day, I am more determined than ever to take my blog in a new direction in the New Year.

    Hmmm…not so miserable after all!

How exciting all of your new things are! I can’t wait to see your new blog direction!

    Stacey,
I completly agree with these great tips and have used them in my own life with great success. And the one you added, is SO IMPORTANT! Fueling the Flames with the oxegyn of support is critical! We need each other! I am so glad that we have each other to cheer on in our quests.

  5. Hi Stacey: I agree that writing down your goals is vital to achieving them, and that you need to keep them someplace where you can see them often. I also think we need to monitor our self-talk; words influence our thoughts, which influence our actions, which create our results.

  6. @Lance - I think “big” and “medium” are relative. Medium might be just what is needed today!

@Stacey - my immediate reaction is “how can I help her”! Coaches can work wonders by providing an outside look in….good luck.

@UrbanPanther - If I awoke to snow, I would be miserable, too. But I’m glad you were able to see the positive side and like Wendi, I look forward to your blog changes.

@Wendi - support is critical - too often I meet people going it alone - that’s lonely and tiring!

@Marelisa - I couldn’t agree more. we have to start thinking more positive so that our actions follow. All to often the good intentions end with just that, the intention.
