Success Comes from The Heart

Note: I didn’t intend to have comments off…they have been turned back on!

Last night I attended a networking event on how to build a successful holistic business. The speaker, Dr. Mark Mincolla, operates a successful health and healing practice in Massachusetts, where he has seen and healed some 60,000 people over the last 25 years. He has a local radio show, weekly segment on cable and is now in talks with the Discovery Channel to produce a wellness related reality show. Based on this information alone, I thought he might have some good insights.

A few key highlights from Dr. Mincolla’s talk:

Be as real as you can be and you will be as powerful as you can be.

  • We are alone, together. We are all our own universe.
  • Mistrust of self and Self-contempt are holding many people back from achieving success. Learn to trust and have compassion.
  • Have a vision, with a beginning, middle and end (my problem: I have the end!). Write it down and review it, make adjustments every 12 months
  • Acknowledge your strengths and weaknesses. If a weakness, surround yourself with “assets” who can help.
  • When you work from your heart, the rewards are 10-fold.

That final statement resonated with me. I grew up believing that I had to suck up my work in order to make a lot of money. Work was not something you did from the heart; work was something you just did. I never agreed with that belief, but I didn’t know anything else. As a result I spent 10 emotionally miserable years working in the corporate world, admittedly making a good amount of money. Even though I enjoyed the work itself, market research, I never ended the day feeling that I helped anyone. Something was desperately missing.

I’ve spent the last 2.5 years, out of corporate and “on my own”. Building a new career, business, and diving into self-discovery. What a wild ride! I’m now in a place where my work comes from the heart. I know this because the information is easier to share, I have energy and excitement around it, and often when I talk about it, tears come to my eyes. I feel my work in my heart.

I think these sentiments hold true in various aspects of our lives. Maybe you cannot quit your job and follow your heart, but how can you bring your heart into your work? Or how can you bring your heart into volunteer activities, family life, or your writing so your day ends with happiness and satisfaction? Regardless of what you do, do it from the heart. (That is how my logo was created…and I’ll explain that in a future post).

How do you bring your heart into your work, writing, family or volunteer activities? How has it enriched your life?

  1. What a wonderful post! I quickly lose interest in things when I don’t feel the “heart” behind them, or if my heart isn’t in to it.

I would rather slave away all day doctoring homeless people for free, than work at a stupid pointless job I hated.

    The highlights are fantastic points.

“Regardless of what you do, do it from the heart.”
This is a powerful statement, yet a challenge for many in todays world.

I think if someone is fortunate to have the carrier that they have dreamed off this might be pretty simple…otherwise not so.

    Nice post as always. thanks!

  4. SARK taught me how to bring my heart into my writing. Learning this lesson helps me write with my authentic voice. Now I don’t spend any time worrying about the people that won’t like my authentic voice.

I love the quote “Be as real as you can be and you will be as powerful as you can be”.

  5. Hi Stacey: This reminds me of a post I wrote about finding your life’s work by looking at the chakra system. If you’re operating from your first three chakras you’re basically surviving. You need to bring it up to the heart chakra-where you go from me to us, and where you ask “how can I serve”–to begin to really find your life’s calling.

  6. I love how you’ve listened to your heart Stacey. And when you think rewards, that’s much more than monetary. It can be physical, mental, emotional, spiritual rewards. And these are the rewards that feed our soul. (Not to say we don’t need the $$$ - we do). But there is so much more to life than money and external success. Finding that spot eludes many. I think we’re afraid to look for it sometimes…

  7. Have a vision, with a beginning, middle and end (my problem: I have the end!).

Me too! So, this morning I wrote up a business plan with short, medium and long term goals, and steps to meet these goals. I now have a road map and feel much happier about things.

I must admit I REALLY have trouble bringing my heart to work. However, I try to view it as contributing a good steady income to support my road map to where I really want to be.

  8. I’m so glad you didn’t make this a black and white issue. There’s not a line that demarcates those who are passionate about their work and those who hate their work. There’s a lot of gray area in the middle to work with, and there’s heart to be found in most work.

  9. For years I dreaded to go to my job, because I dislike it so much. My heart wasn’t there, so I really believe that if your heart is in whatever you decide to do, it is much more enjoyable. Great post!

  10. @Dr. Nicole - I agree, which is why I quit the corporate world to start my own business

@M - Thank you for clarifying “career” instead of “carrier” I was confused! And thanks for coming back. I’m not convinced that even if you don’t have your dream job you can’t bring your heart into your work. That’s a choice we all have in our power to make.

@Stacey - true, when I first started writing I had fear about how my words will be perceived. Now I know that these are my words and some will like them and some will not!

@Marelisa - the chakras system is so interesting to study. We are energy and if we can balance our energy systems we could have more power and heart. You are right, as a society we are often in our heads (upper chakras) vs our body (lower chakras) and we have become numb to it.

@Lance $$ is scary, especially today. Our society depends on it and that make it easy to get “blocked”.

@UrbanPanther - proof that it is a choice - you see the positive side of it, while working toward other goals. Now, I’m off to create the beginning and middle part of my plan!

@Sara - Thanks. the world is not black and white, and I have learned over the years that black/white thinking gets me nowhere. We all have options, we’ve got to figure out what works for us!

  11. It’s interesting that so many people are miserable in the corporate world.

I used to be an attorney. Hated that. But I had the luxury of exploring my creativity while supported by my husband who is very much IN the corporate world - and enjoys it. Were it not for that, I’m not sure I would have changed anything. Financial security has important advantages too.

  13. What a nice message you’re sharing with this post! I do find that when I work from the heart, I feel much happier. Success is found in the joy that I’m experiencing. Material wealth is then, a natural by-product from work that is done through the heart.
