Need an attitude adjustment? Check in with your basic needs.

My husband is a former Outward Bound instructor. As a guide he was taught to check in with basic needs if group participants began experiencing frustration or mood changes on the trail or excursion. Typically the frustration or mood change was the result of one of these needs being out of balance.

What are the basic needs?

  • Hungry
  • Thirsty
  • Tired
  • Lonely

When I think back on my own personal experiences with frustration or moodiness, I can, in many cases link the frustration to one of the items in the list above. I tend to stress eat most when I’m feeling lonely (and lonely can be so many things). I get very frustrated and impatient when hungry or thirsty. And tears are not uncommon for me when I’m feeling tired.

How about you? Notice any trends for yourself? It’s been an interesting exercise for me to observe, and more often than not, one of the above is out of sync when I need my own attitude adjustment.

  1. Hi Stacey,

Absolutely! When I’m overly hungry (which I work on not allowing that to happen - not a good thing for me), stressed out, bored, frustrated, any of those things, I’ve had tendencies towards wanting to eat. It’s not as bad as before because I worked with a program that helps you heal your emotional eating, but I still have to stay on top of myself and self-monitor.

That’s really cool, too, that your husband was involved with Outward Bound. I always thought that would be a great experience, to do one of those treks.
