Monday Quote and a Lesson on Age

“Live your life and forget your age.” - Norman Vincent Peale (1898-1993) American Minister and Writer

I’m taking rowing lessons this summer and just started my 2nd session.  6 weeks in a beginner boat and we’ve all come a long way!   Flexibility is an important component to a long stroke.  Thanks to yoga, I have more flexibility now than I did several years ago, allowing me that nice long stroke.  During an instructional moment on the water this morning one of the women asked why I had that long stroke - was it my height or flexibility.  The instructor responded “flexibility.”  The woman said “she’s young.”  I yelled from the bow “It’s got nothing to do with age.”

When I was in my 20s I couldn’t touch my toes and a forward bend killed me.  Today, it’s not so bad and I can touch my toes.

So often we use age as an excuse (myself included), a barrier for not actvely and energetically participating in life. Granted, the women in my boat are actively engaging, but are they fully?  The comments about age and flexibility tell me perhaps not.  Improved flexibility at any age has to come with appropriate practice - you’ve got to stretch! I believe we’re never too young or too old to try anything.
