Eat A BIG Breakfast for Weight Loss
More calories in the morning may be the way to go for weightloss, the BBC is reporting today. Though small, (only 96 participants in the 8 month study), Dr. Jakubowicz, a US researcher from Virginia Commonwealth University, found that those who consumed more calories with a breakfast that included both carbs and proteins, over time, lost and kept off more weight than those participants who consumed less calories and fewer-carbs.
According to Dr. Jakubowicz,
“Most weight loss studies have determined that a very low carbohydrate diet is not a good method to reduce weight. It exacerbates the craving for carbohydrates and slows metabolism - as a result, after a short period of weight loss, there is a quick return to obesity.”
Sound familiar? I know too many people who have fallen for the low-carb diet craze and then gained even more weight than they originally set out to lose. I also know too many people who skip breakfast because they are too busy, or because they believe skipping meals is actually the key to losing weight. Where did these distorted views of food and eating come from? We need food/calories for metabolism, energy and nourishment. When I miss a meal, or a meal is delayed I get cranky! Eating is a basic need that when unmet can cause more stress and frustration!
Me - I love oatmeal and fruit, or eggs and toast for breakfast. I do find that when I have only a bowl of cereal I’m hungry about 1 hour later. I have always heard that breakfast should be the largest meal…I don’t remember where or when, but I’ve tried to live by those words!
What kind of breakfast eater are you? Big, small, do you skip?
