Are you caring for aging parents or spouse? Help is available.
Every time I conduct a stress management training and engage in the conversation of “What stresses you” inevitably the response “Caring for aging parents” comes up. The baby boomers are getting older and so are their parents. In many cases the boomers are also still caring for children at home (known as the sandwich generation). And according to the Pew Research Center nearly 10 million boomers are now raising kids or supporting an adult child while giving a financial hand to an aging parent. You are not alone.
It is a major cause of stress and the good news is help and support is available. Local to me is an organization called South Shore Elder Services, which offers a variety of resources and programs for both caregivers and the aging parent or spouse. In addition to support networks, it’s important to have a great and caring elder law attorney. I recently conducted an interview with Diane Sargent of South Shore Elder Services and Elder Law Attorney Leanna Hamill on this topic of caregivers, stress and ways to help manage the process. The video podcast is available on my website and is can also be viewed by downloading to iTunes. Once you arrive to the podcast page, click the “Subscribe” button at the top to download.
Not on the South Shore? No problem, either of these ladies will be happy to offer you a referral or a Google search will most likely yield enough results to move you forward. Leanna writes a wonderful and popular blog on Elder Law and Estate Planning. You may also visit websites like eldercare.gov or to find a local elder law attorney contact the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys.
