Learn from the past, don’t live in it

“Don’t let yesterday use up too much of today.”
- Will Rogers (1879-1035) Cherokee-American Cowboy, Humorist and Social Commentator

So much of stress is created by holding on, thinking about the past, of what “could have been”. What if you believed that “what could have been” could actually still be? Instead of holding on to yesterday, creating tension, stress or even anxiety over events in the past, consider those experiences an opportunity to learn. Ask yourself, “What went well?” or “What could I have done differently to make the outcome more favorable?” We learn by doing, and sometimes that means making mistakes. I consider mistakes opportunities, not failures.

What happened yesterday is over, a done deal. Every day you wake up is a fresh start. Every moment is a fresh start, a clean slate. If yesterday didn’t go as planned, it’s ok. Let go of judgments, expectations and even your ego and use the power you have within you to learn so that today can be that much more satisfying.

This is not about forgetting the past, it’s about no living in it. Every day, every moment is a new one to be enjoyed. Instead of living in the the past, begin to appreciate it, learn from it, accept it, and continue to move forward.

Have a great weekend!
