Do you know what FEAR is?
According to dictionary.com fear is “a distressing emotion aroused by impending danger, evil, pain, etc., whether the threat is real or imagined.”
The last line is what gets me “real or imagined”.
I live in fear - fear of failure, fear of not succeeding in business, fear of whatever I’m thinking. I’m working on it. Not that long ago I was talking to a business coach who askd me “Do you know what fear is?” I looked at him puzzled.
He said, “Fear is False Evidence Appearing Real.”
Now, I’m not talking about impending doom like the fear that accompanies falling down the stairs, or a car accident. I’m talking about the fears that may stop you from moving forward in your life. The fears that stop you from switching jobs, getting out of a relationship, or hiking through the Grand Canyon. The fears I lived with were stories I created about how much I wanted to start a business but what if no one wanted my service or what if no one came to my workshops?
I was creating these unhappy endings and I was believing them! These events hadn’t even happened and yet I believed them. Every time I start to tell myself a story with an unhappy ending I just think “false evidence appearing real”. I instantly change my tune into a happy ending and outline the steps I need to take to get there.
Does that mean success in every situation? Maybe, maybe not. But if I let my false stories get in my way, I’ll never know.
