Yoga Class Review - Blind Fold Yoga at South Boston Yoga

If closing your eyes during a yoga class freaks you out, then blindfold yoga probably isn’t for you. If blindfold yoga intrigues you even a little bit, then I invite you to explore it further. The class takes place at the newly opened South Boston Yoga Studio on Dorchester Ave in South Boston. The studio is owned by past Best of Boston Instructor David Vendetti.

Blind fold yoga is not some kinky style of yoga, the purpose is to get you to pay attention to you and your body - no looking around to see what someone else is doing, no picking at your fingers and toes, no wandering eyes during a “boring” seated forward bend. It forces you to pay attention to yourself - peaking not allowed!

The class included some flow - not too much - lots of down dog, child’s pose, hip work. No warriors, no standing balance, no triangle pose. Lots of seated poses. David indicated at the beginning that he would start slow and over time as students became more comfortable with the blindfold he would instruct on more advanced postures. He did throw crow at us, though and though I did panic (my ego) for a moment, I quickly got into my breath and managed the posture just fine.

The studio is spacious with large windows along the front wall bringing in lots of light. You walk right into the studio, greeted by a friendly face at the front desk. There is plenty of space to hang coats and leave shoes and there is an abundance of yoga blocks, blankets, straps, mats ($1 rental) and of course blindfolds. Which admittedly I was nervous about using from a cleanliness stand point, but at the end of class David instructed us to put them in a large bowl so they could be washed. Phew.

Two of the walls at the studio are yoga walls. (Walls that have straps attached to them to help with your practice.) You can work on your hamstrings, back bends and more with these yoga walls.

Not only is this a comfortable and welcoming studio, it’s “green”. The studio is located on the first floor of the Macallen Building - Boston’s first residential green building.

There is a full schedule of classes daily, morning until night, including various styles of yoga, meditation, pranayama and open practice. Drop in rate is $15, class passes/memberships are available. And he’s located a few steps from the Broadway T stop on the redline.

If you are looking to practice yoga with a full mind/body experience mixed with a little bit of humor (ok, a lot of humor) then David’s class is for you. He is funny and compassionate while inviting you to explore the postures even deeper than you might do on your own. If you can’t make David’s class, he has a variety of instructors teaching which I’m sure will live up to his standards. There is a reason he was voted Best of Boston instructor a few years ago.
