Wellness at Work - It Works!

I was encouraged when I read a short article today on Boston.com about businesses getting innovative with wellness (originally published over the weekend). It seems companies are finally understanding the benefit to the bottom line by offering wellness programs and allowing employees the time needed to take care of their health. The result will be decreased health care costs and increased productivity.

In New England employer health care costs are increasing an average of 12% annually. That’s nothing to balk at.

I don’t agree that motivation with money is the best way to get people focusing on wellness, the article briefly explored both sides of that story. My belief is that if an individual can make changes to their wellness, they will have more money in their pocket.

Think about it for a moment. Perhaps you spend a little bit on a gym membership or the occasional yoga class, but imagine the savings when you no longer have to make frequent trips to the doctor, buy medications, spend excess money on junk food, or dare I say, cigarettes.

The article goes on to state some pretty significant numbers that companies have saved as a result of implementation. Wellness works. When a company offers it and allows employees to participate it creates a win -win. The investment is definitely worth it.

If your company can’t afford it, consider bringing in a consultant or instructor to offer programs during lunch weekly or even monthly. Start by figuring out the budget then poll employees to find out what they are most interested in.

Does your company offer a wellness program? Do you participate?
