Are apples the new diet craze?

You’ve heard the saying “An apple a day keeps the doctor away”. Well now it might keep the calories away. I just read this on Yahoo- new research shows that participants who ate an apple prior to their meal consumed 187 fewer calories than those who were given apple juice, apple sauce or nothing. This suggests that eating a whole fruit is more effective.

Researchers claim that eating foods low in calories like an apple, salad or soup provides you an extra course and the end result: you eat less.

Just watch the calories consumed in the salad dressing and the soup - depending on the type of soup.

The Director of Cornell University’s Food and Brand Lab in Ithaca, NY, Brian Wansink states, “This is great evidence that it’s not the calories, but it’s the effort of eating that tricks us into thinking we’re full.”

What do you think? I know when I eat an apple I do feel full because it is so full of water. I’m going to start noticing if I eat less as a result. It is an interesting concept. Maybe restaurants will start including apples and oranges on the appetizer menu.
