New Study - Acupuncture Good for Chronic Back Pain

A study conducted at a University in Germany finds that both real and fake acupuncture perform much better than conventional care for low back pain relief.

The study appeared in today’s (Monday) Archives of Internal Medicine.

Conventional care = medications, physical therapy, exercise.

After 6 months the study participants showed the following results:

  • 47% of patients improved in the real acupuncture group
  • 44% improved in the fake acupuncture group (needles not inserted as deep and not in the right spots)
  • 27% got relief in the conventional methods group

Because both the real and fake groups experienced positive results, researchers wonder about the true effects of real acupuncture. Perhaps the needles trigger a psychological effect?

I have had acupuncture for heel pain and allergies. It worked on my allergies. My husband has had good luck with it on his back pain. Have you tried it? What kind of results did you have?

  1. I have never tried acupunture as a method of relieving my back pain but i may give it a shot even though after i bought a special mattress that supports my back as i sleep i have had very few problems!

  2. Back Pain is a pain in my… well… back!
I was hit by a car a few years ago and since then I have suffered a lot of lower back pain and back ache! I was on strong painkillers for awhile but then I was getting addicted to them so had to drop them before it got too bad. That was about a year ago now and since then I have been looking for alternate ways of relieving the pain and aching until a month ago I was struggling to find anything that helped but I managed to get hold of some Cheap Sleepeezee Beds and I finally got a good nights sleep! It was great!
    However!
Upon waking from my beautiful bed the relief only lasted until I got to work then the suffering began once more.
Can anyone give me any advice to ease my pain?

  3. To anonymous: unfortunately giving pain advice over the internet is not something I can do. That said, you may consider seeing a doctor who specializes in back pain for more advice. If you have done that, there is plenty of information available on the web about alternative methods of healing back pain. Definitely speak to a professional who has experience working with chronic back pain.
