Stressed at Home? Create a Quiet Space
Recently I posted a few things you can do to manage stress at work. Then I thought what about stress at home? Many of the ideas I wrote about in the work post can easily be done at home. One thing I left out that is better saved for at home is to Create a Quiet Space.
Your quiet space does not have to be an entire room. Find a corner of a room and call that “yours”. Dress it up to include your candles, favorite plants, photos, pillows or chair, books and magazines. Anything to make this special, quiet and calm. A retreat to come home to. Not sure what to include in your space? Check out the list below. I asked Linda Merrill owner of Chameleon Interiors and the online magazine ::Surroundings:: for some inspirational ideas. Her ideas fit perfectly with the mission of Back to Your Senses. Here is what Linda has to say:
Bringing oneself back to nature is the quickest way to relieve stress and calm frazzled nerves. If you’re looking to create a quiet space in your home, think of creating one that brings the outside in and speaks to the five senses:
Sight
The goal is to relax the eyes, avoiding stimulating reds or purples or too much pattern and color mixes.
- Soothing colors such as soft greens and yellows are relaxing and natural looking.
- Natural textures such as plants, wood or branches, grass cloth or bamboo are visually interesting, without being overly stimulating.
- Avoid clutter - the principles of Feng Shui suggest that clutter is draining as it holds in the bad chi (energy).
- Lighting should be flexible - not too bright or too dark. Lights on dimmer switches or three-way bulbs will let you select the right light level for the moment.
Sound
Cover up distracting noises such as street traffic or televisions/phones by using a sound machine or water fountain. Turn off cell phones and other devices for dedicated quiet time.
Touch
Furnishings and rugs should be soft and comfortable. All materials should be natural ones such as cotton, linen or wool. Synthetics are harsh, unnatural and don’t breath well. Natural materials hold up longer, clean better and don’t hold in unwanted smells.
Smell
- Fresh flowers and plants, organic soy candles and soothing essential oils such as lavender and chamomile or sandalwood work well.
- Keep the area free of unwanted smells. Locations near the laundry room, pet centers, litter boxes, gerbil cages, etc. are not the best choices for a relaxing space.
Taste
A small amount of quality chocolate never hurts.
Thanks Linda!
Isn’t it time to set up your quiet space?
