Reebok Heart Rate Monitor - Review

I have been exercising for over 10 years. Running, biking, swimming, weights, yoga, hiking. I have run road races, marathons and taken 25 mile bike rides without a heart rate monitor. Recently, I decided to buy a heart rate monitor.

I always recommend to my clients that they use one, so I figured it’s time for me to use one.

Where We Bought It
We went to The Sports Authority to buy one. I hadn’t done any research on them prior to this shopping trip and I didn’t really know what I was looking for. I knew that a monitor would cost me anywhere upwards of $50 depending on the level of sophistication. (Some cost upwards of $300!)

Basic monitors have only a heart rate monitor. I knew I also wanted a time display. I like to have a watch on when I run.

What we bought
After comparing several models, we ended up purchasing the Reebok Fitness Trainer Heart Rate Monitor. Why? Because it had all of the functions we needed and happened to be on sale. Originally priced at $99.99 and we purchased for $49.99. Great deal!

Product Features
Features of this model include

  • date/time
  • stop watch
  • heart rate by age
  • alarm
  • chest strap
  • detailed instruction booklet and more.

Thank goodness for the instruction booklet. A few weeks later and I still have to refer to the booklet once in a while. There is a lot to know and there are some things I haven’t figured out yet.

Luckily they give you a phone number to call for help. I will be calling soon.

Overall Thoughts
While this was a worthwhile purchase, and I like the monitor, have patience and read the booklet because there are so many options.

Not everyone likes wearing the chest strap, and I wasn’t sure how I would feel having something wrapped around my ribs for a run. I can honestly say it’s not that bad. You feel it, but it didn’t bother me. There are monitors available without a chest strap. Note: the monitors with a chest strap provide more accurate readings.

Overall I would recommend this monitor to those who are in the market for one. And again, I highly recommend everyone wear one during exercise to know whether you’re working too hard or not hard enough.

Do you wear a heart rate monitor when you exercise? What’s your experience?
