Creating a more healthful office

The June edition of Cooking Light has some great tips this month. Check out these 5 tips for creating a more healthy work environment. If you have the June 2007 edition of Cooking Light you can find these on page 42.

“An ergonomically correct office can help avoid or prevent muscle aches, fatigue, carpal tunnel syndrome, and tendinitis,” says occupational therapist and certified professional ergonomist consultant Ellen Rader Smith.

  • Lighting. Prevent eyestrain by supplementing light on paperwork or reading area with a desk lamp.
  • Monitor. Place monitor at eye level with keyboard directly in front, rather than to to the side. The point: To not rotate your head to view the screen.
  • Keyboard. Preferred height is seated elbow level, which prevents strain on shoulders, forearms and wrists.
  • Chair. Seat height should be adjustable so feet rest flat on floor, with spine and head upright, forming a straight line between ears and hips.
  • Mouse. Position close to keyboard; avoid extended arm reaches to minimize neck, arm, or wrist strain.
